Emacs is wicked

I used to only use Emacs for lisp (slime === the best), but recently I've started using it for every goddamn thing. For all the "code" I write at work there's a really good mode in Emacs FTEW that usually places it head and shoulder above any other editor I've tried so far.

nXHTML is fucking fantastic.

Steve Yegge's js2 mode, uses an elisp port that he wrote of the actual Rhino Javascript Parser... WTFAMIRITE! how awesome is that! It actually highlights syntax errors in 'realtime'. It's pretty insane.

Htmlize FTW.

For anyone who hasn't ever used Emacs or is using for one thing and is afraid to dive in... let me just be one more to say, it's shitloads of fun on the other side.

You'll notice that mike.name, gary.name, mike.count, and gary.count are all undefined. count was in the scope of the anonymous function that returned the constructor so any functions declared in that same scope (i.e. Constructor.sayHi(), Constructor.getCount())can access it, but no others. myName is declared in the Constructor itself each time it is run and therefore only the functions declared in that scope can use it i.e. those specific instances of .sayHi() and .getCount() methods.

doesn't seem to work for me, which is sad because it would be nice. I wanted to replace the switch statement with one that took a function and applied it to the cases, rather then being limited to simple equality. Instead of:

So it turns out the png-8/indexed png can use alpha transparency...

All the modern browsers support it and even ancient browsers will degrade in a sensible manner

Here's the catch. Most image editing programs don't actually have any way of creating or even understanding these files because the standard for transparency in indexed images is just that one color in the pallette is the colorkey and is totally transparent, png is different in that

"Transparency control is also possible without the storage cost of a full alpha channel. In an indexed-color image, an alpha value can be defined for each palette entry. In grayscale and truecolor images, a single pixel value can be identified as being "transparent". These techniques are controlled by the tRNS ancillary chunk type. "

The easiest way to make these at the moment is to make a png24 in your favourite image editing program then use a quantiser to convert it to a png8. The ones that I found are called pngquant and pngnq. Whenever you're using pngs it's also not a bad idea to run them through pngcrush which will optimise them for size.

On Debian/Ubuntu you can get them all with: apt-get install pngquant pngnq pngcrush

On Windows you can probably get them off sourceforge.net

Say you had a 24-bit png w/ alpha transparency that called example.png you wanted turned into an optimised (24 color) indexed png with alpha transparency, you might type this:
pngnq -s1 -n12 example.png && pngcrush example-nq8.png example-crush.png

Adobe Fireworks can also do them but I hate fireworks wit a passion and avoid it wherever possible. It's actually fantastic for this job though so give it a go. I'll post some examples later.

Speedcubing update

I haven't been writing about my speedcubing lately because it's not very interesting and I haven't been doing much of it.

I knew I was slowing down a little but I hadn't been timing so imagine the look on my face when I was getting 28s averages... as it turned out though I just needed to warm up because I just got a sub-24 average, which is about where I left off I guess.

What I have been doing as regards cubing, is blindfold solving. I've been practising it for more than week now an I haven't had a successful solve yet ... maybe today eh?

So ... it's been a while.

On the off chance that any body actually reads this crap.

I've been working my new shithole job doing shithole hours and besides the shithole money... I'm actually enjoying it. How sad is that. Progress on the script for the first issue of Knock on Wood hasn't been all that ( that's code for "I haven't written anything in weeks" ) but I have the outline of Issue two floating around.

It seems that one of the few ways I can actually trick myself into drawing something is to write on this blog that I'm going to post it.

In the spirit of that, I will post some drawings of the following characters tomorrow before midnight. Woody, Rob, Kat, Jess, Lance and Ravi.

This will happen.

I can do the work and make comics happen for me or I can work shithole jobs for the rest of my shithole life.

I've been sanding houses and doing my "training" for working at the arcade. I've also done a bit of writing. Should have the knock on wood script done soon.
Doing a bunch of updates for goldfish method e.g. adding AUF to the beginning of all the LL algs. reworking f2l algs. Rewriting the LL algs so that the text actually tells you exactly how to do them.

man, it's a good thing I have a blog. I have such interesting things to write about.

I think I might write some stuff about webcomics sometime soon. Unfortunately how I'm super angry all the time probably isn't that interesting to read... maybe I can write some reviews or summat, at the very list I'll add some webcomics to the link bar.

now that the KOW script is almost done, I actually need some finished character designs... I should get to work on that.

Goldfish method, first draft is up. Some of the sequence pairs need set-up turns added and some of the algs are pretty bad. I'm going to tidy up the styling a bit and tweak the shit out of the F2L page. I got a 23s time with this method so I'm pretty sure it doesn't blow goats.

been on #Rubik on ircstorm a bit lately. You can't really learn speedcubing there but hints and tips abound and they're an alright bunch.

after I finish learning Goldfish LL (26/35) I'm going to learn COLL Petrus style. I already know all the recommended sequences, I just have to learn the 32 or so cases.

I'm doing some part time work at the local tekken joint over the christmas holidays. I'm so damn growed up. I've worked in a game store, made cartoons and now I work at an arcade. I think I'll be a clown next... but then I'll actually have to learn to juggle instead of just talking about it.

I've been working on a new speedcubing method (which I need a name for), here's the gist. You build a 2x2x3 and orient remaining edges ala petrus method. Then you build a 2x2 on the F layer and another on the U layer. Then you finish F2L while preserving the 2x2 you built on the U layer. This leaves you with two edges to permute and 3 corners to orient and permute.

You solve these in one step. In Half of the cases the edges are already solved and only the three corners need to be solved. This can be done with only a few sequences if you know their inverses and mirrors and they are fast sequences and the situations are easy to recognize because recognizing corner orientation is practically instant and each orientation case has only 3 permutation cases each visibly different. This is the main benefit of the method a 50% chance of a very fast (and easy) one look last layer.

The other 50% of the cases aren't that bad either. They average around 12 turns and are a little trickier to recognize (I probably just need time to learn to read them easily). I'm using sequence pairs ala petrus ZBLL e.g. Sune + Allan, Niklas + Axel etc.. and that's turning out alright for now but I'm coming up with them by hand when I don't like the ones that lars uses so it's taking me a while.

Hopefully more than zero people that are not me will learn this one because it's taking more effort to put together than L5C did and I think it's actually fast.

Also I did some drawings today but can't be assed scanning them right now.

I took a short break from cubing to escort some kids to Rotovegas, and not only were said kids rough enough with my speedcube to make it noticably looser but I swear I've gained more than a second from that lack of practice.

Now a sub-25 average seems unreachable.

I just did an average with several 24.xx times ... but right at the end were three times over 30 seconds ...

My F2L is getting smarter, which usually becomes faster with time. I think my bad edges stage has slowed down, I should probably practice using the four edge flip with the M-slice moves.

Been flying the insanity flag on the sea of madness that is speedcubing.

Having never previously gotten under 20 seconds, today I got four sub 20 solves. Of those four only one was lucky. Two of them were in one average, the average being under 25 seconds!

That's better than Hamish Watts' (probably the fastest cuber in NZ) record and Jasmine Lee's (Official record holder for Australasia)

I've been thinking about getting into python/pygame again ... I really want a tetris that supports and rewards all SRS twist tricks and supports and rewards 4x4 squares New tetris style (and also I believe in Tetris worlds)

when you make a 4x4 block that is made solely of whole tetrads it turns silver and when you clear lines from that 4x4 you are rewarded with bonus points/garbage

also when you make a 4x4 block that is made solely of whole and identical tetrads it turns gold and when you clear lines from that 4x4 you ar rewarded with even more bonus points/garbage

also instant drop without locking and a double spin button are to be included and an easy (i.e. human readable files) way to edit rotation tables.

Also a scorch clone seems fun to make. With internet play and scriptable items. Also interesting would be an online mode with continuous money where the various items/weapons (or perhaps components thereof or maybe items can be fused into other items o_O? ) are in limited production and are tradeable commodities periodically auctioned off for game money. Perhaps with tools for users to set up easy stores and tournaments. Perhaps even sealed deck style tournaments (e.g. 10 rounds $10,000 buy in. You will receive 3 light Shields 120 parachutes 4 baby nukes 4 napalm 4 nukes 1 deaths head and 1 funky bomb) or even draft style ("Yeah! The rare is a heavy shield") omfgwtf? Oh Shit this sounds fun already.

Just got a DIY cube and assembled it. It's fucking beautiful. It usually takes me ages to get a cube the way I like it but with this one I got a sub 30 average straight away.

If anyone out there is still cubing with a 25th anniversary cube or ... something even worse?!?! Get yourself one of these right now!

strangely both of the sub 27 second times were the 'R' perm. Which I'm normally really slow at.

by the by I've also learned a fairly fast algo for the V perm. which I got off the cubefreak site and is attributed to leyan lo, so I've stopped doing niklas,niklas, doublesune which was painfully slow.

I'm considering starting on lars petrus' top secret one step last layer method but I'm not sure I'm willing to learn 270 positions ... although perhaps even a subset could be useful e.g. the 49 positions that are possible after corner swap or the 30 something sunestyle positions ... or something like that

it seems interesting from a theoretical point of view... but that's a lot of learning

I also started putting together a website that explains the L5C method. It's ugly as sin at the moment and not really very good for teaching... it DOES have all the OL5C and PL5C formulas up. I'm trying to write a L5E section and redoing the PL5C formulae in ACube to actually be fast.

So umm pretty soon, a usable resource for learning L5C! The method that time forgot!*

it's better than my old average but brought up by just a few major screw-ups i.e. 45 and 49 on the 45 i dropped the cube and on 49 i screwed up the N permutation and had to do G to finish.

I think I might have to buy another cube because this one is too loose. The downside is having to use a brand new cube!

I decided that I'm going to start a blog to put some of my thoughts, sketches and other random crap online.

Hopefully this will help me be less lazy about drawing and writing.

I may also post some speedcubing related stuff up here like the controversially named SIlver blade method and the more utilitarian L5C method

If you don't know who I am, frankly I'm shocked that you somehow ended up here, I am an an out-of-work animator with aspirations of webcomicking glory who enjoys tekken, speedcubing tetris, killing doctor lucky Discworld books and for those who haven't guessed it yet is not too good with the ladies.
